"Tuzik" puppy cookies are crumbly shortbread cookies made from two kinds of dough: light and chocolate. Hearts cut from the light dough become the faces, while halved hearts cut from the chocolate dough become the ears, nose and eyes. It's a fun process, so you're in for a great time baking with the kids, I recommend it.

"Tuzik" Puppy Cookies

Crumbly shortbread cookies shaped like a puppy's face: light dough for the base and chocolate dough for the ears, nose and eyes.
Prep Time 25 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Chilling the dough 30 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 10 minutes
Servings: 20 cookies

Ingredients

  • 160 g flour
  • 100 g margarine softened
  • 50 g sugar
  • 2 g vanilla sugar
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • salt pinch

Method

  1. In a bowl, mash the margarine with the sugar using a fork. Add the salt, vanilla sugar and flour, knead the dough and gather it into a ball.
  2. Divide the dough into two parts and mix cocoa into one of them. Chill both balls of dough for 30 minutes so they can rest.
  3. Roll out each ball into a sheet and cut out hearts with a heart-shaped cutter: first the light ones, then the chocolate ones. Cut the chocolate hearts in half - these will be Tuzik's ears - and pinch off small bits of dough for the nose and eyes.
  4. On a floured baking sheet, lay out the light hearts first. Attach the chocolate half-hearts to them as ears. Finally, roll small balls and attach them as the nose and eyes.
  5. Bake in an oven preheated to 200 °C for 15 minutes. Let the cookies cool, then enjoy. Enjoy your meal!

Notes

Be sure to chill the dough, otherwise the faces will lose their shape while baking. It's fun to assemble the cookies together with kids.

Tips

  • Don't skip the fridge: half an hour of resting makes shortbread dough much easier to work with - it stops sticking and holds its shape while baking.
  • Cutter: you'll need a heart-shaped cutter - it forms the face from the light dough, and a chocolate heart cut in half gives you two ears at once.
  • Roll the nose and eyes into small balls of chocolate dough and press gently - they'll bond with the base as they bake.
  • This is a great recipe to make with kids - assembling the faces is much more fun than just cutting out cookies.
