Savory Crackers

Crunchy homemade tomato crackers with fresh herbs and black pepper - a safe alternative to store-bought chips and snacks, delicious with both beer and coffee.
Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Chilling the dough 30 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 5 minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 190 g wheat flour
  • 30 g butter
  • 2 tbsp fresh herbs
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper can be left out for kids
  • 2-3 tbsp water
  • 1 egg for brushing the crackers
  • 1.5-2 tsp salt for the dough and for sprinkling

Method

  1. Combine the flour and half a teaspoon of salt in a bowl, add the butter and rub it into the flour with your hands until crumbly.
  2. Add the fresh herbs, tomato paste and black pepper. Gradually knead the dough, adding water a little at a time.
  3. Gather the dough into a ball and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
  4. Place the dough on a floured surface and roll it out thin - 2-3 mm thick.
  5. Prick the dough with a fork and cut into diamonds or squares, whichever you prefer. Transfer to a baking sheet, brush the top with beaten egg and sprinkle with salt.
  6. Bake in a preheated 180 °C (355 °F) oven for 10-15 minutes, until crisp. Enjoy!

Notes

If baking for children, leave out the heat - skip the black pepper.

Tips

  • For kids: leave out the heat - simply skip the black pepper. If you're baking for yourself, feel free to keep it in.
  • Serving: these crackers are delicious with beer, and also with coffee.
  • Roll the dough thin, 2-3 mm - that's exactly what makes the crackers truly crunchy.
